Mistake #1:
TREATING SOCIAL MEDIA LIKE IT'S JUST ANOTHER TO-DO
Building a powerful and successful social media strategy isn't particularly hard or complicated...but there are several little pieces of the puzzle that need to be in their proper place.
Should I post to every platform? What do I post? How often should I post?
These are just some of the MANY questions you'll have to answer along the way.
Most entrepreneurs are taking wild guesses based on something they’ve likely heard from a friend or colleague (who's also not a social media expert) and haven't taken the time to invest in the education they need. The thing is, you can't treat social like another annoying little to-do item that maybe gets done...but probably won’t, and likely not with excellence.
In reality, it's one of the most important pieces of your overall marketing strategy. When done right, it can build your brand, and earn you consistent revenue now, and over the lifetime of your business.
It's time to give social media the time and respect it deserves.
Mistake #2:
THROWING SPAGHETTI VS. CREATING STRATEGY
Think of creating your social media strategy like going to the gym. If you were committed to getting fit, you wouldn't look around a gym, do one bicep curl, one squat, pick up a free weight (just to see what it felt like), then take a look in the mirror to see if it's working yet. If you were committed and didn't have the education you needed, you would take a class, or hire a trainer, and make a PLAN.
The former is literally how MOST entrepreneurs approach their social. They throw a few different posts out with zero strategy, then wonder why it's not working for them.
What's a hashtag? Where do I use them? What's an ad vs. a boost? What's a lead magnet? What's an ethical bribe? How many of my posts should contain links? What's a good mix of content for my business and target market? What’s evergreen content?
These are just some of the questions that need to be answered BEFORE a single post goes out. It's time to stop throwing spaghetti at the wall, and create a well-thought-out strategy that will get RESULTS.
Mistake #3:
NOT BEING CONSISTENT
Think of social media like drinking water. If you drank just one glass of water, you might not really notice any difference in your overall health. You could look at your skin, feel your joints, and say, "See, no difference at all. Drinking water must have no effect on my health."
Again, this is how most entrepreneurs are doing their social. They get all gung-ho for about 2 weeks, then stop completely and wonder why social isn't working for them. OR, they post 3 posts this week, skip 2 weeks, do 1 Live, skip a month...and again, wonder why it's not working for them.
How often should I post to Facebook vs. Instagram? How often should I be engaging with my audience? Why does this all feel so willy-nilly?
Social media, like drinking water, requires consistent action over time to yield results. If you started drinking 8 glasses of water every single day, you would definitely feel the difference! If you create a stellar social strategy, and post the right content-mix consistently every week and every month, your business will transform!
Mistake #4:
LETTING TECHNOLOGY OVERWHELM YOU
Social Media is not brain surgery or rocket science. I promise.
Many entrepreneurs throw in the towel, and give up on the whole thing when they hit one tiny bump on the technology turnpike. It sounds something like, "I hate this...I feel totally behind, I don't even speak the language, so how can I make this work for me??"
How do I translate my business knowledge into online marketing success? What's a client journey? What's a Page? Profile? Channel? Grid? How do they all fit together?
Every single piece of social media is a learnable skill that YOU can master.
- Even if you feel like a "techno dummy".
- Even if you're just getting started.
- Even if you think social is just for the youngsters.
- Even if you don’t have much of a following right now.
You CAN learn this and let it be one of your favorite parts of your business. Yep...I said it. You can go from hating it, to loving it...or at the very least, loving the results it's bringing you.
Mistake #5:
TRYING TO BE EVERYWHERE & TRYING TO BE PERFECT
Most entrepreneurs totally freak themselves out thinking that they need to be posting three times a day, seven days a week, on every single platform, to get any results. They feel like maybe they're not ready...or they don't have the right team, or the right logo, or the right website...and on-and-on...
I want to be everywhere. Shouldn't I be on every single platform out there? How much TIME is it going to take to post to all those different platforms every single day?
The reality is that when you choose the RIGHT platforms for YOUR business, and when you create a solid strategy of content, posts and promotions, you DO NOT need to be everywhere at all times.
It's time to take a deep breath and recenter. YOU CAN create the right and REALISTIC strategy for you, your team and your business. Give up trying to be "perfect" and allow social media to start working for you! You know...like NOW; not when you've waited for yourself, your team or your business to be "perfect."
